An ultrasonic cleaner should be selected around the items you need to clean, not only the number printed on the tank. Advertised capacity is the approximate tank volume; usable basket space and working liquid depth are smaller. Measuring the longest, widest and tallest item before ordering helps prevent an expensive sizing mistake.
Start With the Largest Part
Measure the maximum part dimensions in all three directions. Add clearance for the basket, part holder and liquid circulation. If several parts will be cleaned together, measure the complete batch layout rather than a single item.
The part should not rest directly on the tank bottom because this can interfere with ultrasonic transmission and may damage the equipment. Use the supplied basket or an appropriate fixture.
Tank Size Is Not Basket Size
A cleaner described as 2L, 6.5L or 30L refers to nominal tank capacity. The basket is smaller, and the recommended fill line reduces the available working depth. Always compare internal tank dimensions and basket dimensions with the item—not only liters.
Typical Capacity Ranges
0.8L to 2L: Compact Items
Compact cleaners are commonly considered for compatible eyeglasses, jewelry, retainers, small nozzles and precision components. For optical shops or repeated batches, choose enough width for the frame and enough basket space to avoid stacking items.

3L to 6.5L: Small Professional Batches
This range can suit workshop components, laboratory glassware, multiple jewelry items and small hardware batches. It offers more loading flexibility without the footprint of a large industrial tank.

10L to 15L: Medium Parts and Repeat Work
Ten- and fifteen-liter cleaners can accommodate larger components or higher batch quantities. They are commonly evaluated for repair shops, laboratories, hardware cleaning and small production workflows. Consider drain access, filled weight and bench strength.
22L to 30L: Large Workshop and Industrial Loads
Larger tanks may suit automotive parts, production hardware, PCB assemblies and laboratory equipment. A 30L machine requires more liquid, more space and appropriate handling procedures. Confirm electrical supply, heating power, drainage and the weight of the loaded basket.

Do Not Overload the Basket
Parts should have space between them so cleaning liquid can reach contaminated surfaces. Dense loading can reduce cleaning consistency, create contact marks and shield surfaces from cavitation. Multiple smaller batches may perform better than one tightly packed load.
Check Frequency and Functions Too
Capacity alone does not determine cleaning performance. Consider frequency, ultrasonic power, heater, timer, degas, pulse or sweep functions according to the workload. A multi-frequency model may be useful when the same tank processes both robust and detailed components.
Plan for Cleaning Chemistry and Rinsing
Choose a compatible solution for the material and contamination. Aluminum and sensitive coatings may need specialist chemistry. If the process requires rinsing or drying, include those steps in the workspace plan rather than evaluating the ultrasonic tank alone.
